Something Interesting: Themed Restaurant Around the World

Angeline Tuesday, December 7, 2010 , ,
Why not try and dine at some Themed Restaurant when you travel around the Globe?

Tree House Restaurant (New Zealand):
This unusual restaurant started life as an ad campaign for Yellow, a New Zealand company similar to the Yellow Pages. The idea was to build a restaurant in a tree using only resources listed in the company’s directories. The designer took pains to minimise the impact on the tree and the surrounding forest.

Pelican Bar (Jamaica South Coast):
The Pelican Bar is located on a sand bar off Jamaica’s South Coast. It is one of the most unique places in the world to witness a sunset. The Pelican Bar specializes in Red Stripe beer and local rum.
Bed Restaurant (Miami):
Bed Restaurant is the most relaxing dining spot in the city. Huge mattresses with mounds of pillows let you relax with a hot date or a small party, after you place your shoes in a cubby and put on Bed’s complimentary socks. The trance music and slow-motion videos projected on the screens attempt to soothe you, as do creative drinks like the blackberry julep, a new fresh-fruit take on the mint julep.

Military-Theme “Buns & Guns” Restaurant (Lebanon):
At Buns & Guns in Beirut, everything is military-themed – from the decor and names of the menu items to the helicopter sounds that play constantly in the background.

Hospital Themed Restaurant (Latvia):
This unique, weird restaurant in Riga, Latvia, is named “Hospitalis”. The restaurant look like a medicine cabinet while you are treated as a patient and taken good care of by the long-legged waitresses in nurses uniforms. The food is served in flasks and operating room’s dishes. This place is owned by local doctor

Medical Themed D.S. Music Restaurant – Taipei, Taiwan
If hospitals freak you out then you won’t enjoy your dining experience as D.S. Music Restaurant in Taipei, but if you’re looking for an unforgettable dining experience, it’s just what the doctor ordered. Waitresses dressed like nurses administers “shots” of booze squirted from a syringe into your mouth. The entire restaurant carries the medical theme with bathrooms marked “emergency room” and wheelchairs and crutches as part of the decor.
Death Themed Restaurant (Ukraine):
This death-themed restaurant owned by a group of Ukranian undertakers is built inside a 65 feet long coffin. Inside you will find funeral wreaths, black shrouded walls and human sized coffins. Menu items include dishes with names like “Let’s Meet In Paradise"

Alcatraz Restaurant ( Japan):
The prison-themed Alcatraz restaurant in Tokyo may be a long way from the US, but it’s pretty authentic. The restaurant’s ‘medical prison’ theme comes complete with handcuffs, fake injections by the ‘nurses’ and a menu consisting of ‘penis sausage’, ‘dead chicken’ and cocktails in test tubes – all taken in your very own cell.

Maid-cafe
Maid Cafe – Akihabara District, Tokyo, Japan
The adorable maid look, popular in Japanese animation and comic books become the central theme of this quaint little cafe in the Akihabara district. While the maid uniforms (although surely fueled by the bizarre fantasies of otaku) seem normal enough for waitresses, you eventually realize those aren’t exactly “waitresses” wearing those pink plaid dresses and aprons.
Cannibalistic Sushi (Japan):
‘Nyotaimori’ in Japanese literally means ‘female body plate’, and this restaurant named after the tradition of eating sushi and sashimi off a nude woman’s body takes the concept to a whole new level. An edible body, with dough ‘skin’ and sauce ‘blood’ is wheeled into the room on a hospital gurney and placed upon a table. The hostess begins the meal by cutting into the body with a scalpel and then patrons dig in, operating on the body to reveal edible ‘organs’.
Pitch Black Restaurant (Beijing):
It’s often said that if you take away one or more of your senses, the remaining ones get stronger. That’s the idea behind Pitch Black, a Beijing restaurant where patrons eat in complete darkness. Illuminating devices like cell phones and watches are strictly forbidden, and it’s so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Don’t think you can get away with any funny business, however – the waiters wear night-vision goggles.
Vampire Café (Japan):
Continuing the creepy, otherwordly themes is the Vampire Cafe in the Ginza section of Tokyo, where the interior is almost entirely blood red. Guests are ushered down a long hallway with red blood cells superimposed on the floor. Inside, the décor includes heavy velvet drapes, black coffins dripping with red candle wax, skulls and crosses. Many of the meals are vampire-themed, and diners drink red cocktails from martini glasses.

Hajime Restaurant with Samurai Robot Waiters – Thailand
Sometimes it seems like all Americans think of when they think of Japan is stuff like kimonos, samurai and robots, but apparently we’re not alone. Hajime Restaurant, a Japanese restaurant in Thailand uses samurai robot waiters to serve their customers in what most ignorant gaijin must assume is a traditional Japanese manner. To be fair, this isn’t really all that disturbing, unless you’re afraid of robots taking over the earth.
Guo-li-zhuang-penis-restaurant
Guo-li-zhuang Penis Restaurant – China
It takes some pretty big cajones to try exotic food when traveling to remote parts of the world, especially if you stumble into the Guo-li-zhuang Restaurant in China. This restaurant may not have an elaborate theme like prisons or toilets, but it sets itself apart in what it serves. Catering specifically to wealthy businessman (who may be trying to compensate for something), this restaurant specializes in penis and testicle dishes, some of which can cost as much as $360
A380-in-flight-kitchen
A380 In-flight Kitchen – Taipei, Taiwan
If you thought a toilet themed restaurant was unappetizing wait ’til you get a load of the one that’s airline themed. But the A380 In-Flight Kitchen in Taiwan doesn’t just serve crusty chicken or fish, they serves a range of delicious western cuisine. The meals come in a standard airline tray, served on carts by flight attendants (or stewardesses if you prefer) just like during an in-flight meal, except there’s enough room that you won’t get your elbows banged up while they go down the aisle
Rising-sun-anger-release-bar
Rising Sun Anger Release Bar – Nanjing, China
In Japan businessmen unwind with a little karaoke, but in Nanjing, China they have take a very different approach. The Rising Sun Anger Release Bar lets their customers use their staff as punching bags—literally. For anywhere from $7 to $40 patrons can vent their anger not only through excessive drinking, but by beating the crap out of one of their well-built male employees. The bar has sparked some controversy as to whether or not it’s providing a healthy outlet or encouraging violence.
Sky Restaurant (Belgium):
This strange restaurant combines the delights of dining with the thrill of well, a thrill ride. You’ll travel 150 feet into the sky before you chow-down on a gourmet meal prepared mid-air. The restaurant uses a mobile crane to lift the entire 22-seat dining room over city streets all over Europe.
