Nam Chai Restaurant Bak Kut Teh @ Sandakan

Angeline Sunday, August 11, 2013 , , ,

There are a few popular Bak Kut Teh places in Sandakan. Nam Chai Restaurant Bah Kut Teh located at Bandar Nam Tung (Tanah Merah) is one of the local favorite too. Bak Kut Teh in Sandakan is quite a little different from West Malaysia, which slightly rich in peppery hot flavor and flooded with soup, it's available at lunch and dinner. Here you can choose seafood (whole fish, fish fillet and prawn) or the usual traditional Bak Kut Teh ingredients like pork ribs, pork belly, pork intestine, pork kidney and etc. Rice noodle in Bak Kut Teh soup is also one of the specialty in Sandakan.

Prawn Bak Kut Teh
The Bak Kut Teh's broth has a sweet and slightly strong herbs and spices flavour. At first glance, I thought that the combination of seafood with Bak Kut Teh was kind of weird. After tasting, it proved that I'm wronged. Prawns gave a nice seafood sweetness to the already tasty Bak Kut Teh while still maintaining its fresh and succulent flavour with a hint of herbs fragrance.

Whole Fish in Bak Kut Teh soup
Fresh fish has a mildly sweet and nice flavour. Served in Bak Kut Teh's broth, it was a rather unique and delicious combination. The heavy herbs flavour eliminated the fishy taste of the fish (if there is any) and enhanced its natural fresh and sweet flavours.

Fish Fillet Bak Kut Teh
If you prefer boneless fish, Fish Fillet is a better option. Fleshy and succulent fish fillet was delicious and tasted perfectly good in Bak kut Teh's broth.
Pork Belly Bak Kut Teh
For those who aren't adventurous on food, you can order the normal Pork Bak Kut Teh with a choice of pork belly, pork ball, pork ribs or pork innards. The delicious pork was infused in herbs and spices flavour after simmered in the Bak Kut Teh's broth for long hours. Especially the pork belly and pork ribs, it was so tender that it will tore effortlessly with a fork and spoon.

Spinach in Bak Kut Teh soup
At Nam Chai Restaurant Bak Kut Teh, even Spinach was cooked in Bak Kut Teh's broth. Well, it was a rather good combination though. Unique but nice.

Fried Chinese Cruller (Yao Tiao)
Rice Noodle (Meehoon) Bak Kut Teh soup
Instead of Steamed Rice, we tried the Rice Noodle in Bak Kut Teh's broth. Well, most dishes here might seems so unique but tasted so good. The rice noodle served in Bak kut Teh's broth was a light and easy meal. The noodle absorbed the tasty flavoured broth was exceptionally delicious.
Total paid for lunch RM160+
