Mai Yai Thai Orchid Restaurant @ Waterfront, Kota Kinabalu

On cold nights, its good to have some nice spicy dinner warm the heart and belly. And KK being a hotspot for Thai inspired cuisines, we decide to go for what people say the closest resemblance to authentic Thai Cooking. And so, its off to Waterfront and we find ourselves at Mai Yai Thai Orchid restaurant.

Our opening dish is the mandatory Tom Yam Chicken. A nice spicy soup with a myriad aroma. Zesty lime, acidic tomato and savory chicken all blend in harmony. This mouth watering soup ignites your appetite for dishes to come. This dish costs RM19.90 and is good for up to 4 person.

Next we had the mandatory rice. But this time done in a unique manner. Kaow ob sapparod or Pineapple fried rice, and presentation is key here, as it comes served in an actual pineapple with the flesh all carved out leaving just the skin. Very exotic indeed, especially if you're a visitor for overseas. Sweet and fragrant fried rice, with some chucky pineapple and chicken. Really gives a normal fried rice a run for their money. This dish costs RM22.90

To accompany such marvelous dishes we had the Phad Tau Hu Onn Gai Sab or Fried Tofu with minced chicken (RM20.90). The soft egg tofu is savoury and faintly sweet, bathed in thick gravy mixed with lots of minced chicken.

Another good accompaniment to have is the Phad Pak Raum Mit, or Organic mixed vegetables with garlic(RM17.90). A variety of fresh crunchy and leafy vegetables, stirfried to release a nice aroma.
Lastly, to top off the great meal, ask the kind waiter what are the dessert of the day is. For us, tonight it was sweet colorful rice balls drenched in thick creamy sweet coconut cream. Served cold, the rice ball is chewy and slightly sweet, while the coconut cream milk is a nice accompaniment. Each of these costs RM8.50
