GONG XI FA CAI at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur

Once again, we return to this popular restaurant in the heart of the Bukit Bintang district, the Lai Ching Yuen Chinese Restaurant. If you have not heard about this place before, maybe you can catch up by reading our previous write-ups here and here. I have always liked this restaurant, and in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year, we got to explore some old favourites as well as some new ones!

Just to quickly recap for those of you new to the blog, Lai Ching Yuen specialises in Cantonese Cuisine or Yuècài (粤菜). The foods here are really fine, but what I liked most about this place is the ambience. The furnishings are luxurious, and they have been at great pains to keep up with the times in the fast changing district. Families looking for a place to celebrate the coming Chinese Lunar Year would be pleased here, not only with the food but the service and the comfortable surroundings. This is going to be a slightly lengthy post, the people at the Grand Millennium Hotel Kuala Lumpur literally has a lot in store for you!

Now, I am pretty sure ALL of you have been to a proper Chinese dinner you haven't, no way where we sit at a large round table enough for 10 or more. And then during the course of dinner you are literally feasted with an 8-course dinner, starting with a four season dish as the appetiser? Well, it is different when it comes to Chinese New Year dinners at Lai Ching Yuen.

To begin with, we were greeted with this side-table filled with starters of Spring Rolls, which was a welcome detour from last year's dinner. Hey, no complaints here, I like mine extra crispy and hot, get it if you can.

Yee Sang with White Fish Baits 👍

Ha! We had much fun tossing the Yee Sang this year! My favourite part of this? Not only was I tossing it with friends both old and new, but that the platter it rested on was large enough to prevent us making a huge mess of the table. Even the most enthusiastic toss it wasn't me saw most of it 99.9% staying inside the platter.
No, I was not tossing the Yee Sang here, I snuck over to catch my friends at the next table, lol.

Double-Boiled Shark’s Fin Soup with Crabmeat and Assorted Seafood

Wok-Fried Prawns with Spicy Sauce 👍
You cannot have a proper chinese dinner without prawns! The sauce was spicy and savory with a prominent tomato base, whereas the prawns themselves were stir-fried and then cooked together with the sauce. The addition of Deep-Fried Mantou bread made a good pairing with the prawns, as we used the bread to soak up the tasty sauce.

Steamed Live Cat Fish with Minced Ginger 👍👍
I was very happy to see this favourite on the table again. The fish was cooked with such skill, that the flesh remained succulent and in fine flakes. The choice of Light Soy Sauce combined with the Minced Ginger could have only come from age-old providence.

Roasted "Pi Pa" style Crispy Chicken with Prawn Crackers
Hehe, I remember this dish quite fondly as well. The meat was quite tender but my favourite part was of course the skin! I was tempted to eat the skin and leave the meat behind.

Stir-Fried Hong Kong Kailan with Enoki Mushroom 👍
Another favourite from my previous dining experience here, the Kailan was as crunchy and tasty as ever. The pairing with the Enoki Mushrooms was also enjoyable.

Fried Rice with Assorted Chinese Waxed Meat, wrapped in Lotus Leaf 👍👍
After so many years and numerous 8-course chinese dinners later, and I still always come back to the mystery of why the rice dish is always the semi-final dish in a chinese menu. We figured this real tasty dish was sort of like an insurance, for those at the table who are still hungry could not possibly be hungry after this dish. Well, I managed to pig out eat one and a half bowls of this because it was that good!

Double-Boiled White Fungus with Longan and Sea Coconut with Nian Gao

To finish off our dining experience, we were treated to this lovely dessert. Do not be fooled by appearances, those mini Mandarin Oranges? It was chocolate! And with that dinner was done, I take this opportunity to thank you Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur for having us for such a filling lovely dinner.
