Genting International Children's Festival & Shaolin Kung Fu at Resorts World Genting

Everyday Food I Love was up here again at SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting to escape the heat in Kuala Lumpur and savour the soothing ambience of the proverbial city in the clouds. This time however, we were here to observe Genting International Children's Festival 2017, and to catch the Soul of Shaolin, a critically acclaimed theatrical event that has toured the world in order to showcase the magnificence of Shaolin kung fu warriors.

Genting International Children's Festival 2017
Held from the 27 May to 11 June 2017, Genting International Children's Festival 2017 is a resort-wide event that carried the tagline, “art, dance and music,”. It was fun and colourful event, with three activities that took place at the SkyAvenue which were “Cheers & Pom: Cheerleading,” held at Level 1 of the mall, “Storyland: Cosplay Meet & Greet” at Level 2, and “Street Beats: Brass Ensemble” at Level 3. There was also two other activities, the “Paradise: Forest Fairies Ballet Dance,” held at First World Rainforest, and the Boulevard's Parade at Genting Grand Open Car Park.

We only managed to catch two of these events during our time here, which was the "Street Beats: Brass Ensemble”. Street musicians armed with drums, trombones, saxophones, trumpets and a tuba entertained crowds of cheering admirers with a wonderful medley of current favourite tunes, loudly!

The other event which we caught was the colourful “Storyland: Cosplay Meet & Greet” where cos-players dressed up as popular heroes enthralled the crowd of onlookers with a dance and heroic antics.

Soul of Shoalin
Everybody wants Kung Fu Fighting, you know how that song runs right? Well, everything started in China with the founding of Shaolin Kung Fu, the oldest institutionalised style of Chinese martial arts. Martial Art fans will therefore be pleased with the chance to witness this live at Resorts World Genting.  The theatrical event, Soul of Shaolin: Hui Guang's Story will be running from the 28 May to 26 June 2017.

A critically acclaimed show that earned a nomination at the 63rd Tony Awards in 2009, it has held more than 500 performances worldwide in such countries as the US, Australia, Italy, Norway, India, Korea, Turkey, Macau, Hong Kong, and Turkey. When it opened at Marquis Theater on Broadway in January 2009, all its seven performances were sold out—and Jan 15 was promptly proclaimed China on Broadway Day by New York City.

Billed as China's key cultural export project by China's Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Commerce, the State Administration of Radio, Film & Television, and the General Administration of Press and Publication, the event is deemed “the Best of China” and is brought to you by Asian Arts Connection.

At Resorts World Genting, Soul of Shaolin: Hui Guang's Story will be held at Genting International Showroom at 9pm or 4pm*, from 28 May to 26 June 2017. There will be two shows—at 4pm and 9pm—on 24 June. A total of 22 shows are scheduled, with each screening lasting 90 minutes (with 10 minutes intermission).

Soul of Shaolin: Hui Guang's Story is a stirring portrait of the life of a Shaolin monk. It tells the classic story of sacrifice and endurance, when a remote village is attacked and a mother is forced to abandon her child in a desperate bid for survival. That child is later rescued by monks and raised in a monastery where he grows up to be tall and strong. But to tell all is to spoil all, catch the play while you can to see how the story unfolds!
