An Evening with A Cuban Master Roller

During one of my recent forays in Kuala Lumpur, I was given the opportunity to witness Master Roller Yuri Damian Martinez of Cuba demonstrate the art of cigar rolling at the Fidel Cigar Lounge, Palace of the Golden Horses. Incidentally, the lounge is named after the renowned Cuban Leader, Fidel Castro in commemoration of his visit and stay with the Palace of the Golden Horses in the early 2000s.

Anyway, going back to my narrative, Master Yuri was here on a brief working visit and had a lot of Tobacco Leaves to use for fillers and wrappers. For those of you unfamiliar with the terminology, Fillers refer to tobacco leaves used to form the inside of a cigar, and they are usually a cunning blend of leaves that determine a cigar's burning rate and flavour.

Now, although I have quit smoking many years ago, my knowledge of tobacco remains intact because it was a habit I indulged in, having started from simple cigarettes and kretek, and then eventually moving to pipes.
The sophisticated reader would know how much pleasure is derived from smoking pipes and cigars, so it was with some high expectations that I paid a visit to the Fidel Cigar Lounge which officially opened on 22 June in this same year, alongside the Truefitt & Hill Barbershop. Those interested to know will be unsurprised to learn that the access to the barbershop and the cigar lounge is through the Polo Lounge.

The furnishings in the cigar lounge is quite lavish and well-appointed. Chesterfield-styled Armchairs and Sofas are placed next to low coffee tables for your convenience. There is a nice view of the outside of the surrounding hotel grounds, it made me smile as I watched the sky slowly darken during sunset. The proximity of the Polo Lounge outside also meant I could indulge in my favourite Gin & Tonic as I admired cigars being made by the Master Craftsman. The good people at the palace were also at great pains to meet guests, Hors d'oeuvre and drinks were served in the Polo Lounge.

I shot two videos on my iPhone, you can watch them here and here. I enjoyed my fine evening here at the respective lounges.
