“Comfort Food” – affectionately named so for the increased level of positive emotional status brought upon us during or after eating it. It refers to food that will provide some form of comfort or satisfaction to the mind and soul, and is usually made up of ingredients which are familiar to us. Mojo’s Upstairs, a new restaurant in SS2, is banked on providing just that – comfort food – to the patrons, with a comfortable price.

Comfort and food at Mojo
Situated on the first floor, it’s almost impossible to miss this place because of the bright red signboard sitting atop of 7-11. Just walk up a flight of stairs to be greeted with a place filled with nostalgic elements in the days of yore – charcoal iron, grandfather’s clock, old analog radio, just to name a few.

Duck skin pasta? Really?

Bruschetta (RM7.90)
Without further ado, we started our dinner with some choices of appetizers. The Bruschetta was a plate of crusty baguette with garlic butter, garlic, fresh tomato and fresh herb salsa sprinkled with mozzarella cheese before being baked til golden brown. The baguette was flavoured from the sour salsa and tomato, but would have been nicer with more cheese, which would attach the tomatoes to the baguette better.

Garlic Bread (RM5.90)
I was more interested in the Garlic Bread though. Even though it’s just plain baguette toasted with garlic-infused butter, it was very aromatic and savoury. These were served warm to bite, with crispy edges and just the right amount of garlic and butter. I could easily clean up a plate of this!

Wild mushroom soup (RM9.90)
The Wild Mushroom soup was, in my humble opinion, a little watery. Perhaps I was used to the thick and creamy texture of mushroom soups that I’ve had before this, so much so that this version appeared relatively weak. This was made from wild mushrooms boiled with chicken stock and thickened with cream, topped with some croutons.

Linguine Duck Aglio Olio (RM18) – Comfort food!
My favourite of the night was without a doubt, Linguine Duck Aglio Olio! The crispy duck was served with linguine that was tossed with roasted chili and olive oil. The aroma itself was just mouth-watering! The duck skin was fried to perfection, giving you that signature crunch and that ooze of juicy fat melting on your palate. Also, the linguine was evenly tossed with some chili flakes and olive oil, making it decadent and moreish. This, my friends, would be my version of comfort food.

Lamb Shank (RM28)
Apart from that, the group of us also had the Lamb Shank to be shared. This was a full-sized lamb shank, braised until tender and served on a bed of mashed potatoes and mint sauce.

Classic Chicken Chop (RM13)
The crowd’s favourite that night was surprisingly the Classic Chicken Chop! Marinated butterfied (coated with butter) chicken served with mushroom brown sauce, fries and coleslaw – a combination that almost never fails! Well, of course it did help that the chicken was really tender and well-marinated, combined with the generous amount of mushroom sauce that made this another comfort food candidate indeed.

Fish and Chips (RM13)
Fish and Chips was another classic dish of deep fried fish fillet in home made batter, served with tartar sauce. I found this to be pretty average but thankfully the fish fillet used was not those frozen ones from the supermarket.

Spaghetti Marinara (RM15)
Normally, the Spaghetti Marinara, or spaghetti cooked with Napolitano sauce and fresh seafood, would be my first choice in selecting pasta. That night, however, the Linguine Duck Aglio Olio took the prize home, and everything else after that was just mild in comparison. But that’s just me.
